Welcome to Our Birth Way and thanks for taking the time to read more about me, Emma, owner of Our Birth Way Doula Services!
I believe that birth is a spiritual and personal journey that is extremely important to the identity and psyche of the birthing woman or birthing person. For this reason, I look at pregnancy, birth, and parenthood holistically. Birth is not separate from our daily lives or identities, it rather influences and is influenced by these factors.
My interest in birth, infancy, and childhood began long ago through my interest in health and the human experience. I am an anthropologist at heart, a woman who studies and reveres the wisdom of our female ancestors. Cultures past and present all have wonderful insights to share with the modern woman giving birth, and I believe very strongly in our legacy of powerful and beautiful births governed by autonomy!
As a doula, I offer antenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum support. My practice is a safe and inclusive space for birthing LGBTQ families and I have a conversational proficiency in Spanish.
I am currently completing my training to be a Certified Doula with the phenomenal Birth Arts International, and I hold a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Human Development was one of three major courses of study during my training; Anthropology and Women’s & Gender Studies were my secondary majors.
I graduated from UNCG in 2012 and moved to rural Stokes County, NC with my now husband. We got married on our land, here at Kuska WiƱasun Homestead, in September of 2014 and since then we’ve filled our fields and woods with new life: gardens, pot belly pigs, heritage turkeys, geese, chickens, and ducks. My husband and I recently began our own business, centered around our homestead life. And… We hope to begin growing our human family in 2016! If you are interested in learning more about what we do together, check out our website, Our Ochre Way.
In addition to loving everything about the magic of pregnancy, birth, and beyond, I have also spent many years working with children, both in public, private, and unstructured settings. My husband and I co-direct the Farm to Your School program, which allows urban kids to interact with pot belly pigs, chickens, and ducks at their own school!
I have also been a jeweler for over a decade and specialize in handmade, eclectic, and one-of-a-kind earring and metal art sculptures. My jewelry business is called The Freeing Dilemma.
As you can tell from the above detailed, personal account, I am extremely open and forthcoming about my life. If you have any other questions that you want answered about me, feel free to ask! I love a good dialogue!
Life and love,
Emma
.:. Hey bud, just checking out the website. It looks beautiful. So proud of you for all that you’re doing and making!
Thanks, Georgia! I love you!!!
I’ve seen you at the farmer’s market– I never knew you were a Doula! That is amazing! I’m about to be an Aunt– my baby brother’s first is due in September. I am 39 in July and have no children– I have worked with children my whole adult life, from prenatal to child yoga, coaching gymnastics, teaching Art and PE to homeschool kids, and to painting faces at the farmers market– but I’ve never had a child so this is a huge deal for me. I’d LOVE to get coffee and just talk sometime! Find me at the market!!
Thanks Tara! I’d love to hear about your future niece/nephew! How exciting!
I’ll be sure to chat with you soon. Thanks for stopping by the website!
